The NYC Teaching Collaborative recruits and prepares talented, committed individuals to become effective teachers who raise student achievement and drive improvement in NYC’s highest-need schools. The NYC Teaching Collaborative is an alternative certification program specifically designed for individuals without a background in education. Participants will apprentice in a New York City public school for six months (January – June), and then again for six weeks (July – August) prior to becoming a full-time teacher. During this time, participants experience hands-on training in a public school classroom and targeted, ongoing coaching and feedback from skilled mentor teachers and program staff. Participants will have the opportunity to take what they have learned during first six months and apply it in the second 6 week apprenticeship with a new group of students for real time reflection, analysis and improvement of their teaching practice.

Award / Eligibility Details:

From January through August, Partner Teachers will earn a stipend of $13,000, disbursed in eight monthly allotments of $1625. In addition, a key benefit of the NYC Teaching Collaborative is the subsidized Master’s degree. Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree, conferred by the start of training; an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0; U.S. citizenship, or permanent residency status with a valid green card; fluency in both written and spoken English; no more than 17 college-level credits in teacher education; no previous teaching certification (from any state, ever); and no experience working as a regular, full-time teacher.
